Mr. Kimishima was a surprise choice to many, especially when early reports suggested Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo’s chief game designer and creator of the Mario and Zelda franchises, as well as Genyo Takeda, Nintendo’s head of research development were two of the frontrunners for the position.
Mr. Kimishima’s background is different from his predecessor and the two men mentioned. His most notable previous positions include the head of human resources for Nintendo, CFO of Pokémon, president of Pokémon of America and CEO of Nintendo of America from 2002 to 2006.
Mr. Kimishima takes over the company during a critical time, as Nintendo tries to revitalize its business endeavors in the ever-changing technological landscape that is the gaming industry. In the past few months, Nintendo has announced the launch of its 1st mobile game Pokemon GO and is developing and designing its next generation gaming console, the Nintendo NX.
Compared to Mr. Iwata, Mr. Kimishima will most likely have a different management style and approach to how the company will operate. Mr. Kimishima’s business experience differs drastically from Mr. Iwata’s hands on game building career.
Currently, Nintendo holds a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), ranks 5th out of 9 companies in its respective industry, and beat its more recent earnings estimate by 200%. Hopefully, Mr. Kimishima’s leadership can build upon the its recent earnings success and steer Nintendo into the gaming future.
